I think with AC you have to be (should be) to be able to work on it and evacuate the system and then to recharge it. It is a day or two coarse at tech schools. At the Mine I work at you have to be certified so we just send most of the people to the class. But maybe Montana and Wyoming rules are different. Not saying you can't do the work if not certified but I won't advertise that you did it yourself to many people if it isn't legal. I think the fluid is harmful to the environment and that is why the certification is needed but I am not sure on that (I only have one working vehical with ac and several that didn't come with the option on the car/truck). Just don't want anyone getting introuble for no reason if someone wanders by that is looking for trouble.
The solar battery tender I saw was about $20-$40 and was at Sportsmans warehouse. May find one at any camping/hunting style store or online. They are made to go on the dash and plug in the cigarett lighter so you don't have to put any cords through the doors. Would be simple enough. With the plug in style the come with (most do) a set of wires that bolts on to the cables or battery posts and then there is a disconnect plug in the electric cord leading to it. So you could have the plug sticking out of the grill and have the charged plugged in the outlet. Drive in the shop and just plug the piece in, no lifting of the hood. No harder then plugging it in for the heater. I have one on my motorcyle as that is impossible to charge the battery while in it otherwise and it is equally hard to remove the battery to charge (I had to last winter as I didn't have power where it was stored).
