When you just turn off the engine in the TDI without popping out the
key, the car is still 'on'. You have to pull the key in order to shut
the power off. Notice when you pull the key that all the lights come
on for convenience to let you gather your stuff.
If it were me, I'd lock the car and take the key with me (oh, wait,
that's what I do!). I think the car was designed to do it that way.
