should not be an issue. Just make sure the oil and water port holes match up, but I do not have both side by side to compare at my house. It will bolt on for sure.
That would be my only concern.
Try going to autohaus az and bring up head gaskets for both motors, say a 82 diesel and 90 diesel, they would be mechanical and hydraulic heads.
you may be able to compare by looking at the pictures

There was a head question over on the diesel-vanagon list that I wanted
confirmation on..
Can one use a 12mm mechanical head on a 92 ecodiesel block, which had a
12mm hydraulic one?
I'm thinking there is a difference in the blocks, but it's not critical?
