Not a seal issue. It's oil compatibility.  The R-12 oil is  carried along 
with the refrigerant
as it circulates.  The 134a supposedly won't carry it as well or at  all.  
Therefore you're 
supposed to drain the oil and change to a different type.  I've talked  to 
people that 
have done many conversions by simply changing freon and adapters, maybe an 
additive that's supposed to bridge the gap.  Several years later those  
systems are 
still going.  <shrug>  
  The 134a is supposed to be a smaller molecule and thus needs barrier  
hose to keep 
it in but it seems that used hoses already have the "holes" plugged and  
don't tend to 
leak as much as they're supposed to.  Sometimes theory meets real  world 
and 
sometimes it doesn't.  ;-)  (sometimes it does both!)
