Not sure about the 91, but you probably need something like this to remove
the unit:

They fit into a small slot on either side of the deck and disengage the
locking mechanism that holds it in place. You should be able to get them
for a few bucks at a stereo shop.
As for who would steal it... good question. I guess when the car was new
the stock deck might have been good for a hit of crack or whatever...
although I think these stock anti-theft measures are really more of a sales
gimmick than an actual security feature.
As for your code issue, try disconnecting the battery cables and shorting
them together for 30 seconds or so (the disconnected cables, not the battery
terminals!) It might clear whatever glitch has infected your radio. Also I
suppose a dirty/loose battery or radio electrical connection could cause
that behavior.
