[Vwdiesel] 89' Jetta starting problem

Bryan,
The shop that I bought it from said about the same thing that you did, except for the fact that they also said if that solenoid sticks, it'll empty the injection pump, so that I would have to prime it, which if it were now empty, would give me the condition that I now have. The shop says that perhaps because it sat for so long, it may be sticking, if that's the case, I'll put a new in. I saw them on the web for $10.00. If I get home at a reasonable time any day this week, I'll check it out, otherwise it'll have to wait until Friday. Working 10 - 12 hours and driving 125 miles each way (through DC and Baltimore), is a giant PITA

With the car sitting and quite, take a wire from the Battery + to the stop solinoid, it will click. When it gets power, it allow fuel to the injector lines, when it has no power, (12V) it stops the flow of fuel and that is what stops your engine.

Just touch it with + wire and you will hear it click.

The RARELY go bad so I do not think that is your issue.
I have never seen one fail.

After the almost run-away engine, everything seemed to check out OK. The glow plugs seemed to work OK, the engine cranked over, and sounded normal (as it had prior to the problem), it just wouldn't fire. I didn't want to burn up the starter, so I stopped. A fellow that I know in the Midwest, who has a diesel shop, just e-mailed me to say he thinks it's the stop solenoid. He4 said to see if it clicks when the key gets turned on. I found one, and it would be an easy fix. Can anyone tell me how they work? I know how solenoids work, I mean what function does it perform on the 1.6?

What do you mean by 'refused to start'? Is it cranking but won't fire? Is it stumbling? Is the starter engaging? Glow plugs?

The revving like you describe is either the fuel injection pump (timing, wear, etc) or runaway (worn rings). The fact that it won't start again tells me it has something to do with the fuel injection pump. We'll probably need some more info, or we'll be shotgunning solutions at you without knowing what we're aiming at.

>Thanks for the quick answer. I was guessing about "fuel relay" and "fuel regulator", it might have been the fuel solenoid that they mentioned, I'm positive it had something to do with "fuel". I'm not too concerned about the shop giving me a hard time (I'm sure that they won't). They have a VERY LARGE TDI customer base, and I've been dealing with them for almost 5 years now. The problem is getting the car to them. They are 47 miles away, and I don't feel like towing that far with my Golf. Not because it can't do it, it's got more than enough power (RC2, G60/VR6 clutch, Koni Reds), but because I always like the towing vehicle to be larger than the car being towed (brakes, handling). If I could figure out what wrong, without a lot of time involved, maybe I could fix it in my driveway. My problem is time. I commute 250 miles (round trip) to work, and work between 10-12 hours a day. That doesn't give me a whole lot of time to play with it.
>
>It was strange as to what happened. It started, and then I usually "blip" the accelerator to get it idling smoothly. This time it took off. I actually thought that perhaps the accelerator return spring broke, or some sort of vacuum line came off, and it ran up by itself. Then when I shut it off, checked the spring, tried to start it again, nothing.

>Hey, nice to see a fellow diesel man on the east coast for once.
>the 1.6na is the most simple motor ever. No fuel relay or regulator but only a fuel injection pump.
>So, if indeed the replace the injection pump with one off the shelf, that is done often.
>What is odd is that the car ran fine for 90 miles. It is not often that a fuel pump will increase the idle on its own like that, but possible.
>So, if the garage that you got the car from is not going to help you with the car because it was bought "as is" then you will have to go back to the basics.

>1. Timing, it is possible the timing belt has skipped a tooth because it was on a bit to loose or the belt tensioner has slipped? One time for no reason at all my van 1.6na motor jumped a tooth while driving down the road, the garage it was towed to reset the timing and all was well? Timing must be checked first. Many threads on how to do this in the archives, but time consuming.
>2. Fuel delivery, if timing is set properly, try to start it and crack the fuel lines to injectors lose to make sure fuel is dripping out while cranking.
>3. Power to the solenoid, no fuel will pass unless you have 12V to the fuel shut-off solenoid on the top of the back of the injection pump.

>I just recently, (about a week ago) got my Jetta, and it ran super. Started instantly, and ran smoothly, no issues at all. I can't say much for the power (1.6 N/A), but I then didn't expect it to be like my TDI. I had put about 90 miles on it since I got it as a back-up to my TDI, and yesterday it got a problem. I went to use it, it started instantly, but then within a second or two, the engine started revving up. I shut it off immediately, and it has refused to start since. Any ideas or does someone know what happened? One thing I'd like to add, and I have a feeling that this may actually be the culprit (I'm guessing), is that when I first saw the car in the shop that was selling it, they were working on the engine, and one of the things that I was told was being replaced was the ?fuel regulator?, or ?fuel relay?. I'm not sure if what he said, because at the time I hadn't decided if I wanted to buy it or not. If one of those two items
> makes sense to anyone out there, please share it with me, because I have the feeling that they may have used a rebuilt or junk yard part, and if indeed that is the case, it'll be replaced with a new one.
