  If you REALLY want to use starting fluid you HAVE to disconnect 
power to the glow plugs first.  
  Sounds like you need to "prime" the pump.  Just pull the fuel return 
banjo bolt, the one that says "OUT" on it, on top of the pump.  Don't 
lose the sealing washers.  Fill the pump with clean diesel, through 
that hole, reinstall the bolt, glow, have the cold start knob out, 
crank it for 10 to 20 seconds and it should start.  Hold the throttle 
at about half.  It won't make it start any faster but it will get your 
rpm up faster once it starts to fire and help chase the air out with 
less restarts.  Keep the starter going until it starts, not just until 
it fires or you'll end up cranking more than necessary.
