Reply to Mark Shepherd, post of 3/5/09. Today, 3/14 was the first chance I had to work on my Quantum's IP.
I do have a dial for the IP which I bought on eBay from Germany. It reads from 0 to 10 mm in .01 increments & came with an adopter which screws into the back of the IP & an extension. There is a set screw at the end of the adopter to lock the gage. However, I suspect the extension may be 2 or 3 mm to long as I have to push the gage's shaft into the adopter to where it reads 2 mm before the lock nut holds it. This is the first time I have used this gage so I am not sure if I am doing everything right.

In following the Quantum Bentley, page 23.4 instructions, I preloaded the gage to 2.5 mm & then turned the engine contra clockwise. The gage would not move. I then set the engine at "0" TDC & turned the engine clockwise with the gage set at 3.0 mm while at TDC. The gage then advanced to 4.75 after 3 gear cogs past the TDC timing mark on the IP & would not go higher. When I advanced the IP 2 cogs past TDC, it read 1.5 mm.

I suspect I may have messed up my IP when I did not remove it from the Quantum to replace the "O" ring referred to in prior postings. The person I bought the IP repair kit "O" from, "George, the diesel guy" from Georgia, advised removing the IP from the Quantum & placing it upright in a vice before replacing the "O" ring.

I marked the "O" or TDC mark on the flywheel with a marking pen & noted the flywheel rotates twice for every one rotation of the IP. Is this correct? I wonder if I could have got my engine 180 degrees off after I had the head off? However, it did run after I replaced the head & before I replaced the "O" ring on the IP to stop the leak.

If some of you would email me your phone number, if you live in the USA, I would like to talk to you re this & possibly other issues. Please let me know when it is convenient to call & your time zone. I have phone service which does not cost me to make long distance calls inside the USA.

I would also be interested in buying a good used IP for my '82 Quantum TD if it doesn't leak & is reasonably priced. Let me know what you have. I notice my Quantum's IP has "something" on top that connects to the intake manifold to compensate for the turbo boost. Again, what turbo diesel IPs are interchangeable without modification? I understand older non-turbo IPs will work but I prefer one set up for my car which does not require modification.
