Bill,
I have to say you need to stop running around like a headless chicken, and
throwing your good money around as likely as not, uneccessarily :o)
I can't believe that the pump has been broken by your seal change. I just
think you've made a simple mistake somewhere [don't we all]...
Are you saying that the gauge adaptor extension inner actually preloads the
gauge by 2 mm? This should not happen as the extension should be free to
poke out.
Are you saying when assembled and then screwed into the pump, the gauge
moves 2mm or so? This can be fine, and you just turn the gauge face to zero
again.
Are you getting this at TDC? If so then turn engine anti clockwise so that
the gauge needle drops off and then stabilises. At this point rezero the
gauge, but be sure that the inner little gauge has not bottomed out.
[This is the preload bit]
You then move engine until TDC appears on the flywheel noting the movement
of the gauge.
This should read 1mm. Bear in mind that the total possible piston thrust of
the pump is about 2.3mm.
If at TDC you have a larger reading than 1mm then loosening the pump bolts
and the fuel lines, grab hold of the pump top and pull it away from the
engine. This is 'retarding ' the pump. If your reading was only 0.8mm
though, then push pump top towards the engine.
The 'spaceship' on top of the pump is the LDR or fuel boost restrictor. It
is connected to the inlet manifold by an air line because there is a
diphragm inside the LDR that pushes down when the turbo boosts the inlet
manifold air pressure and it controls the amount of extra fuelling
available. It actually restricts over fuelling, and can be adjusted to suit
your driving style.
When looking at TDC, be sure that valve cam lobes are sticking up in the air
when you do a fuel pulse test to ensure pump isn't 180Deg off....
Regards,
Mark
