[Vwdiesel] Question about what seems to be a tired starter, 92 A2 Jetta TD.

Bryan,

That oil really shouldn't make a difference in starting. I don't notice any
down here and we had some single digit mornings. I only plugged mine in not
for easier starting but for less wear on startup since it will be up to temp
faster.
I would say your starter is old and tired. Many on here would say rebuild
it. My time is limited so a new one would be the way to go if it was me,
which I did do about two years ago. I also added some #2 wire for grounds to
the block at the starter from the battery and to the body. That seemed to
help on cranking speed as well.

I am sure my oil is a bit thick for winter, 20W-50 but when I changed it in
the Fall I forgot to put the 15W-40 in and I have been fine as I can plug
the car in at home as well as at work when it is cold.

Now that temps are getting warmer, still just seems to be a bit to slow at
turning the motor over "Fast enough" to get a good start when chilly and not
plugged in.  I am pretty sure the starter is original with 210K on it now.
The motor turns over about 10 rotations before it just starts to fire as I
can hear the battery slowing down and the Battery is only 1 year old.

Autohaus AZ has the new smaller, lighter and much more powerful diesel
starters for $110.  $61 core charge.

Should I not even fart with the old one and just get the re-manufactured
Bosch unit?
I put one of these in the Vanagon 2 years back, WHAT a difference.
I guess I answered my own question here.
