So the engine is out and i removed the trans to inspect the clutch and am not seeing a TDC mark.
I can see, with the valve cover off, when number 1 valves are closed though could this be 180* off
TDC. Even if this is TDC it's a close guess as to exactly TDC based on valve position and of course this assumes it was correct to begin with.
I have, in the past, marked the positions of crank, cam and locked down the pump and then changed the t-belt and it did perform well afterwards, though I am thinking a finer procedure is required.
I will buy a timing gauge to fine tune the engine when it is in and hooked up to a radiator
I have a bentley and have checked the 4crawler site and was just looking for a little more
guidance then either source is offering on this one.
It is a 1.6 NA motor of indeterminate age and miles that i got out of a caddy that had
a rusted frame. I did a bench test on the engine, it did start easy and run smooth
without smoke so i think it is worth changing the t-belt and installing it in my needy
rabbit.
I know we have discussed this often and so maybe an archive is in order here.
thanks,
ray
