Well, if it was running well, then it should be close to correct with TDC.

But it sounds like your understanding of the ratios of crank to cam is a
little backwards. You can't have the crank 180 off of TDC with the cam in
the correct position if it's close to the correct timing. The crank turns
twice for every one turn of the camshaft. Therefore you can have the *cam*
180 off, but not the crank. Every time the cam is in the correct position
the crank will be too.

All that is assuming it was timed right to begin with, or at least close to
right, which it sounds like it was if it was running.
