Get out the tow strap and pull it. There is in my experience almost a
zero chance that a pump failed while sitting a year connected in the car. My
procedure with a VW diesel that has set for some time is to pour diesel or
ATF into the top of the pump by taking out the banjo bolt on the return fuel
line. I put that back in and crank. If it won't start I crack one high
pressure line on the top of one injector. If when I crank it the pump puts
out air then fuel I do the other three one at a time and then the car will
almost always start. If it still gives me a hassle or it didn't pump any
fuel out of the line to the injector then I just tow it. I have started VW
diesels that have sat as long as 7 years by doing nothing else but putting
some fuel in the tank, fuel into the top of the pump. a good battery and
then tow it. If a car has set for a long time I usualy turn the engine over
by hand to make sure it isn't frozen. On a car I got just for the car and
not the engine and the engine was frozen I have slowly let out the clutch
while towing and with a stout strap the engine either turns over or the
clutch will probably slip. I haven't had that happen though. I once bought a
VW Fox two door wagon gasser that had the clutch so frozen that it wouldn't
break loose. I ended up using a hole saw and cutting an inspection port in
the bell housing. Then using a big flat screw driver and a hammer I drove
the blade between the pressure plate and the flywheel many times as I turned
the engine over by hand. The pressure plate finally popped off the flywheel
and I was able to drive it for a month or so before I pulled the engine and
tranny and replaced it with a 16 valve engine and a 5 speed
I just a month or so ago bought a 1983 Mitsubishi Mighty Max four wheel
drive 2.3 turbo diesel pickup that the previous owner had pulled the head
off because of a blown head gasket and found the head cracked. I bought the
pickup for cheap and I had a two wheel drive parts pickup of the same
vintage. I pulled the head complete with injectors and glowplugs and
installed it on the pickup. The beast would not start with the starter so we
pulled it. A quarter to a half mile down the road it came to life and it
starts instantly ever since.

and turned it over but no fuel.. hooked a vac pump to the filter and have
