Played with the Jetta some more today. I advanced the idle screw on the IP & will stay running at about 1200 to 1500 RPM (my guess, no tach) but can't get it to idle normally. Wondering why some prior owner added the electric fuel pump? My suspicions are the IP needs replacing but no signs of leakage. Also SURPRISE! The A/C works! This Jetta appears to be a standard model with A/C but no sun roof or power steering. Also found the alternator/ A/C idler tension pulley loose. Corrected this & heard belt squeal for a short time, then went away. This Jetta was at an import garage in Davis. The prior owner had a new battery & alternator installed & then it looks like the garage owner just stopped further work not even bothering to tightening up the accessory tension pulley. It looks like to me that the prior owner got some expensive repair info & just gave up on the Jetta which I bought for paying off the garage for the cost of a new battery & alternator, around $150.

Is the IP from the '80 Dasher & '81 Rabbit interchangeable with the '86 Jetta?

Someone said my '81 Dasher had a 1.6 engine. Did any 1.6 diesels have 11 mm rather than 12 mm head bolts? The Dasher had 11 mm head bolts which I re-tapped to 12 mm to use the 12 mm ARP racing studs.
