[Vwdiesel] '02 Golf starts/dies

Yes the TDI does, I own two jettas 01' and '04 both you can hear the pump
run when I turn the key on, before starting;
You can actually remove the line from the tank at the filter turn the key on
and see if you get fuel.

The VW manual page excerpt;

Fuse No. 28 is OK

Briefly operate starter. Fuel pump must activate audibly.

Switch off ignition.

If fuel pump does not activate:

Proceed with troubleshooting relay-controlled electrical circuits, using
test system 1466 A : Electrical Wiring Diagrams,
Troubleshooting and Component Locations , Guided Fault Finding with VAS 5051
