[Vwdiesel] '02 Golf starts/dies

Negative... I think your 04 has a lift pump (it's a PD engine right?) but
the 99.5 - 03 (and I'm pretty sure the earlier A3 chassis as well) models
most certainly do not - at least not from the factory.
The *only* fuel-moving unit on a 99.5-03 TDI is the injection pump.  If that
weren't the case, we wouldn't have so many problems with those damn
T-fitting O-rings!

Clearly the manual is wrong on this subject (and it wouldn't be the first
time that the manual glossed over something TDI-specific) but you can find a
hundred threads on the TDIClub confirming this fact.
