[Vwdiesel] URGENT_ step or no step in dasher flywheel??

i have conflicting info and a quick answer: 
is the flywheel on a dasher stepped? the one i took off and brough to my favorite machine shop has a small step. YET, the machine shop's book says NO STEP. The step is small, like 1/32" or less.

Rig: 1980 dasher, diesel.

I don't have a dasher specific Bentley (but about 20 others!)
