Last time the alternator went out in the '85, I rebuilt it. I didn't
know what I was doing particularly, but when I replaced the brushes and
the bearings and put it back the way it was, it seemed to work...... I
don't know how many miles ago that was but it still works (or would if I
would ever finish putting the suspension/steering back together). I got
lucky and found a local shop that was getting out of Bosch rebuilds and
was willing to sell me the parts. Another shop had quoted me something
like $118 to rebuild the unit. When I asked them how much for just the
brushes and the bearings, they said, "$118." That kind of attitude
pretty much ensured I'd find a way to rebuilt it myself for about $18 in
parts.
