[Vwdiesel] at a lost

Hi,
I have gotten great help from all of you in the past and I am at a place where I don't know what the heck is going on.
Okay, I got my diesel running this Summer and it developed injection pump leaks. So I decided for the learning experience and because I am inherently cheap to attempt to change the gaskets on one of my old VW injection pumps I had in the garage. I got the gaskets replaced, put it back together and got it in the car. I had a 1.5 liter 79 diesel at one time and the pump had a smear of yellow on the pump so I assumed the pump was a yellow dot pump. I set the timing to 1.15. I primed the pump. I primed the lines and started it up. It ran, but it raced, smoked like hell and the pump would not respond to the throttle. It started racing faster so I attempted to shut it off and it wouldn't shut off. I pulled off the fuel line from the filter and it eventually died. I do remember that when it shut off a gush of airy foamy diesel fuel pushed back up the inlet fuel line, if that means something.
I went out and got some lubro moly diesel purge I was going to run through it, but now I can't get it to start. I pulled all of the lines going to the injectors and fuel is coming out of them as the engine cranks. I pulled out one of the injectors and it didn't look carboned up or anything, but I went ahead and replace the injector with a spare one that had been tested as being good. The engine doesn't even appear to fire. I adjusted the timing to .88 thinking maybe, just maybe it really wasn't a yellow dot pump and that may make a difference. Could the pump work, as I have said it does get fuel coming out the lines, but something is wrong with the high pressure part of the pump and it's not putting out enough pressure to open the injectors?
So do any of you have any suggestions, or maybe I should just open up my moth filled wallet and go get a rebuilt pump.
