I bought a few years back a Scirocco with an automatic. the lady sold it
to me for 100 bucks because she had it in the shop many times because it
wouldn't start and she was tired of calling for help or a ride. My long time
VW mechanic friend Harvey Nelson said we will bring a few tools and drive it
away. He just jumpered a wire from the solenoid to the battery and it
started. I said afterward we should have towed it around the corner before
we started it just to be nice to the lady.He said it is a regular problem
with a Rabbit with an automatic. Just too much heat by the starter which is
in the back of the engine. We installed a relay and a starter button and it
was a start every time vehicle. Actualy key switches are a problem on
Rabbits and other VW's I have a '90 16 valve Passat that won't start with
the key switch and it got the starter button conversion. Most of my Rabbits
have gone that route also. The Rabbit key switch is puny and everything you
can take off it helps. I also had a 1000cc Moto-Guzzi motorcycle that had a
Bosch starter and I had to install a starter button on it also.

Nope, the van has always started with the remote start trick in the back,
even when hot.
The starter is one of the newer Bosch re-mans and it only about 3 years old
with very little time on it.
I love that starter, 1/2 the weight of the old 1.6 starter and a lot more
power it seems.

I do not understand why heat is effecting things, but is surely is.

I am getting closer, will do the re-crimps on my battery cables after
cleaning and try running alt. monster wire along the floor to by-pass wire
going to the starter from the key.

I will let ya know.
thanks all.

When you say;
"Yeap, I forgot to mention that a wire from the solinoid extra tab, or the
remote start trick from the back of the van, ALWAYS start the van on 1/2 a
rotation. So, I am pretty sure my battery has enough emmph and the starter
is good."

Is that when hot too?
Cause I'd suspect a bad winding in the starter, that is shorting only when
hot.

imho
