[Vwdiesel] nest of caddys... pump query

Can someone tell me what the actuator thing on the side of the pump in this 
picture actually does? The electrical output? There is none of this on my 
Quantae, but there is on my father's 1.9 FIAT. Is it any use for my diesel 
strobe's inputs?
