If you didn't keep tension on the plunger while loosening the distributor
head (longer bolt through the timing hole) then the thing you heard drop was
probably either a camplate roller or the little shim at the base of the
plunger.  Trying to run the pump after either has fallen out of place will
typically snap the plunger as it will try to cock in the bore.
