[Vwdiesel] starter question

Hi all,

   I got my Rabbit diesel running after screwing around all Winter with the injection pump. The car runs good now. The starter starts the car fine when the engine is cold, but when the engine is warmed up after driving and I shut it off the engine turns over really slow. The starter also sound like it pops out of starting when it's cold occasionally. I suspect it's a starter problem because I really worked over the starter trying to get the car started various times over the last 6 months. So does this sound like it could be the starter failing. I also thought it would be easier for an engine to be turned over when warm verses cold.
