First check your electrical connections on the pos and ground cables (both ends).
The kicking out would be a bendix (starter drive) going bad or weak power to the
starter. The hard starting hot can be a bad connection or an issue with the
brushes or bushings.
If you were fighting the pump timing then it may be too far advanced.

Subject: [Vwdiesel] starter question
Hi all,
I got my Rabbit diesel running after screwing around all Winter with the
njection pump. The car runs good now. The starter starts the car fine when the
ngine is cold, but when the engine is warmed up after driving and I shut it off
he engine turns over really slow. The starter also sound like it pops out of
tarting when it's cold occasionally. I suspect it's a starter problem because I
eally worked over the starter trying to get the car started various times over
he last 6 months. So does this sound like it could be the starter failing. I
lso thought it would be easier for an engine to be turned over when warm verses
old.
Thanks
Dave
