[Vwdiesel] New Project

Hi Loren;
Kennedy engineering makes a tranny adapter for VW water cooled to
914 tranny. I suspect it sets very upright since my sand rail friends run
water-cooled on their sand rails with bug trannys and they set upright. If
it is too tall for the hood a bubble in the hood would be an easy project. I
also have all the Dasher parts needed to tip the engine a little.
As for the 50 mpg estimate of mileage I think I'm being
conservative. I get 50 mpg in my 1981 Dasher if I run about 65mph. I would
expect that with my 1.5 intercooled and turboed diesel in the 914 I might be
able to get close to an honest 60mpg at 60 mph on a trip but even though I'm
70 years old I'm not sure I will be into driving the 914 conservatively.

I never found a problem with them, if adjusted properly. The later,
"side shift" are almost more solid than the A2 shifters. I have the
earlier, rear shift tranny and still had no problems, once the slop
was taken out and adjusted properly.
I wonder just how well a watercooled VW engine will go into a 914.
If it doesn't clear the hood (guessing, it's close) then it'd have to
rotate, then that'd need some Vanagon diesel stuff but there's still
adapting to the tranny, unless the Vanagon used the same bolt pattern
as the air cooleds.
I'd hope for better than 50mpg even, considering I got 38mpg on a
trip, out of the stock 1.7 L-Jetronic.
