  I never found a problem with them, if adjusted properly.  The later, 
"side shift" are almost more solid than the A2 shifters.  I have the 
earlier, rear shift tranny and still had no problems, once the slop 
was taken out and adjusted properly.  
  I wonder just how well a watercooled VW engine will go into a 914.  
If it doesn't clear the hood (guessing, it's close) then it'd have to 
rotate, then that'd need some Vanagon diesel stuff but there's still 
adapting to the tranny, unless the Vanagon used the same bolt pattern 
as the air cooleds.
  I'd hope for better than 50mpg even, considering I got 38mpg on a 
trip, out of the stock 1.7 L-Jetronic.
