[Vwdiesel] squishy brakes?

Well if it's getting down that far, I would think you'd either be seeing a
puddle of fluid, or it must be the master cylinder.

As for the stuck bleeders, long long ago on my 81 AMC Condord, I bled the
system just by cracking the actual brake fitting and letting the air out
there. :)  Not that I'm recommending that procedure...

Otherwise, maybe vice grips?  I've read that a mix of acetone and ATF will
do wonders, but I've never tried it.
