[Vwdiesel] Go for head studs or bolts

Rudy:
We haven't finished the conversion yet, but I do have an '80 Dasher wagon that we are planning to put a Quantum 2N five speed into.
While the two transmissions are the same overall length, the five speeds stay thicker further along the transmission, to house the extra gear pair. You will likely need to cut a small section, bend it into the car for clearance, then fill in panels. Tim and I are going this route, rather than cutting a hole and boxing it in.
You will also need a bracket to move the mounting point in the rear; again, because of the extra thickness. I have one made by a fabricator who did a couple such conversions if you would like measurements, or I can hook you up with him.
A friend of mine is looking into making a set of 4 speed bushings out of a more durable material; he works for a machine shop, so he has the access. If he can do it, we'll put the PW in the Dasher, put the 2N in the Fox, and call it done.
He's also looking into building a short shift kit to go with the bushings, if anyone is interested in that. More interest makes it all more likely!

Kurt, I'm thinking of building a Quantum Turbo Diesel engine and installing
that and the 5 speed into my 1980 Dasher SW daily driver. Have you actually
done this conversion?
I wouldn't be doing it for a while as the original engine in the Dasher is
low miles and runs very well, and strong. Actually, I'm happy with the
power and drivability of the 1.5l and 4 speed and I love the car, just
thinking of down the road a hundred thousand miles or so.
If I did the conversion, I'd like to cut out part of the tunnel and
fabricate a new piece for the tunnel to fit. What do you think?

Unfortunately, you are correct. Only 5 speed transmissions out of an Audi
4k, VW Quantum, and VW Fox will fit.
Also unfortunately, putting a five speed in a Dasher requires that you apply
heat, a BFH, and possibly some cutting and welding to clearance the tunnel
for the fifth gear hump. If you want a taller, more durable 4speed, however,
you can put a PW from an 80's Fox in there no problems.

Reply to Doyt W Echelberger. Thank you for the offer but I don't think a
Jetta transmission would fit as the Rabbit/Golf/Jetta engines are east west
or traverse engines whereas the Dasher & Quantum engines are north south
engines. I believe the transmissions are different & the only 5 speed
transmission that would fit a Dasher would be from a Quantum. If by chance
it would fit, I have a 5 speed Rabbit transmission that could serve as a
donor.
