[Vwdiesel] Blow-by test?

Ark, your answers are certainly the most entertaining! And yes, I've got a
leaker which needs a quart every 500 miles (not km) and whose oil turns
black almost instantly so I guess I'm looking at a rebuild sometime... Or
perhaps sale? I doubt if I'll get this car past PA inspection this year,
due to rust alone. I'll find out soon enough.

Thanks again to all replies,

Joe

The best blow-by indicator is oil color change. Oils in my early days, 60
years ago ) were very clear, light honey color. We ( I and my mentor Hans
Joachim Augustin Freiherr Jeronim von zu Putlitz - a Luftwaffe mechaniuc at
age 14 ) could compare fresh oil color ( sample in 50 ml graduate ) to oil
after 250 km. If oil was much darker, we with the help of densitometer
estimated the blow-by. Today I wouldn't care about blow-by as long I am not
adding into an oil leaker a quart of oil every 500 km and not draining a
tar.
A good oil test lab has the best answer. Ark
