  Use a tap.  I think 7/16 NC is what fits.  Just run it in a good ways 
and pull it out.  Takes a little time but it works well.

  They're usually fine unless the tip got worn from the hardened surface 
piece, on the push plate, falling off or coming loose.  Make sure it's 
not bent also.
