After I sent the email, I was thinking about it on the way to a friend's house.  I was thinking something very similar.  Good to know the size.

The one tip is definitely blunted from something.  I don't know for sure if it is from the plate or bearing (didn't see it until the rod was out), but my money would be on the plate.  The hardened piece on the old plate is intact.  Does this mean it is usable?

There are a few nicks in the middle of the rod because it got jammed in the bushing (no damage to the tips from this) and I guess my padding in the vice grip wasn't good enough.  I figure it isn't anywhere near sealing surfaces so I might smooth it out a bit and call it good.  Assuming that the worn tip isn't a problem.
