[Vwdiesel] A2 shifter alignment question

I've got the '85 basically back online and only need to fine-tune the 
shifter.  As it is, I can barely find first.  It and reverse occupy the 
same slot somehow.  I see in the Bentley that the main advice revolves 
around a special tool which lines up on the reverse lock tab on the 
shift lever and a protrusion on the tunnel in the floor.  Anyone have 
the dimensions for that?  Any other advice?  I changed the shift lever 
to get the reverse lock back now it's worse than ever and I have to bump 
the clutch to make sure I'm in first not third or reverse.  Killing the 
engine is a bad thing in a lot of urban traffic situations, to say the 
least.
