I did not buy the kit yet thanks to your responses. However I did get a response from the www.mercedessource.com that the $229 tester was a universal one & the $199 was Mercedes specific. I reviewed the attachments on how to build a tester. I do have a few spare jacks I could use but where do I buy the high pressure gage & steel parts to make it. I could salvage an injector line off my '80 Dasher parts car for the connection from the gage to the injector. The attachments on how to build an injector tester were not clear as to how I attach the reservoir of diesel fuel to the jack. I have never taken a jack apart but assume it has some kind of seal. I know there is special jack oil & I don't know how it differs from ordinary oil or how the seal might react to diesel fuel. I would prefer to learn how to check & rebuild my own injectors. There is a car swap meet coning up this Sunday in Sacramento where I might be able to find something & on Saturday will be heading to Berkeley (San Francisco Bay area) & would have Saturday afternoon  if I knew what type of store to go to. 
I searched the VW diesel parts area on eBay & the Mercedes Source was the only injector tester I found for sale.
