[Vwdiesel] I was all ready to pat myself on the back for fixing the Alt. issue in my A2 Jetta

Monday night I hit a big pot hole on the way home and my alt. light is flickering dim all the way home, running on battery.
Tuesday, work from home, shovel the entire driveway, 1 foot of wet icy snow, not fun.
Get the van out and Jetta in, turn on the heat.....
I removed the voltage regulator to find the one brush springing out and wire broken, ok, that is my issue.
I had saved an old voltage regulator from 10 years ago, it was the same thing, put it in and test the output.
14.7 volts, no light on in the dash, I am good to go. Right.
Tested voltage at the battery posts, 14.7
Today, drive the car to work, (65 miles) no dash warning light on at all, just the normal when starting the car and having to rev. the motor a tad to get the speed up to kick it into operation. At one point I turn my wipers on and they seem slow.
filled up with diesel, seemed slow when starting.
Get to work, just enough juice in the battery to turn the warm motor over.
I have no charger with me, no voltage meter, just a cord to plug her in so starting will be as easy as possible, otherwise have to call AAA for a jump.
So, the voltage regulator looked the same, could it be the wrong one? What is up here? If it were not producing enough voltage while the car is running I would have my dash warning light on? It is not on.
Ideas anyone. I finally thought I won by getting to re-use a VW part horded away 10 years ago, and I actually found it!
