[Vwdiesel] Anyone ever removed an a/c and heater unit from later year pickup??

Particularly a 1981 version.

I want to remove it so that I can install a simple non a/c heater, but it's removal appears to be a headache; especially with what I see of having to remove whole dash first.

Anyone who has done this that can add or provide easier method?
