Good Morning Bill,
Thanks for the info. I do expect that there will be a lot of meaningful information that will come through this group. I also expect that when you solve the timing problem on your engine you will have gained some insight into the most expedient method to use, without removing the cylinder head.
Hello VW Diesel fans. My name is Gerry and I joined this group several days ago when I was seeking information on the Net and came across this group. Several years ago I began working as a Courier, using my vehicle to pick-up and deliver various cargo's to various places. I began this venture using my VW Jetta, diesel powered.
The different routes I have "run" have come and gone and the vehicles I have used have also come and gone. What I have learned along the way is simply that older VW's seem to be the most reliable for my needs. I have also learned that the only cost-effective way to maximize the positive cash flow from this line of work is to do all of my own mechanical repairs.
With that said it should become self-evident that exchanging information about these older VW's will be highly important to me as I'm sure it is with you and the VW's you have held onto and use.
OK It is about time here in Hoosier Land for me to go run my Sunday Route of 335 miles with 19 pick-up and delivery points. I do hope that you are warm and comfortable in your part(s) of the world before tomorrows work day begins.
Gerry

I am aware that for what ever reason, the camshaft is no longer in sync with the crankshaft. I know about the slot at the rear of the camshaft & have the tool you described along with the tool to lock the IP & gage for the rear of the IP. My concern about the wire thru the glow plug hole would not be perpendicular to the piston & the wire might bend as opposed to riding up with the piston.. In finding TDC, I plan to loosen the camshaft gear.
To have the reply posted for all members of this discussion group, you email the response to VWdiesel at vwfans.com & under the Subject, type "More Quantum Questions? to reply to my question or what ever follows "Re:{Vwdiesel} if a different topic is being discussed. I think the group has these replies catalogued under these various subject headings but am not sure or how to access these. Perhaps someone else can enlighten us on this. It is also desirable to end the question, reply, or comment with their name & where they are from Some members live in the UK, at least one in Texas, some in Calif. ,at least one in Alaska, some in Canada, & location can effect the answer to the problem. Residents in Alaska & Canada have different climatic condition from Texas & Calif. Also, there were & are more VW models sold in Europe than the USA & Canada.
Your message to me & my response should go to the discussion group as I am sending them a copy.

Hello Bill,
I just joined this group several days ago and in looking at where this particular email is going, it looks like it will go directly to you and not to the group. How do I send email so that it goes to the group?
Looking at your question about finding TDC, I wonder if somehow your piston timing got out of sync with your valve timing. I may have said that wrong. Actually, the camshaft is timed to the crankshaft in a mechanical manner.
I think that "wire trick" would be effective if and only if your cam shaft was in alignment with your crankshaft.
With the valve cover off, at the rear of the cam shaft, there are two slits in the cam shaft. When the crankshaft is at TDC one should be able to take the special VW alignment tool or just a metal ruler or something flat like a metal ruler and slide that tool/ruler into those slits to stablize the cam shaft and hold it in place. The VW Tool is made to lay on the flat top of the engine head and be slid into those two slits. That VW Tool, by the way, looks something like an old draw knife people used to use to debark small trees, etc. Thus, the back side of the VW Tool or draw knife is flat and the front side has a slope to it. In operation, when the mechanic slides the Tool into the cam shaft slits, the slope on the top of the Tool will only allow the Tool to go so far and even out each cam shaft slit.
If you have the top of a piston being stopped in its upward travel by a valve (in its downward travel), that is an indication that your cam shaft is not aligned with the crankshaft.
I hope this information is helpful to you.
I've got a Quantum Diesel and the Injection Pump took a dump on me. The weather has been so cold that I haven't looked at the problem in any kind of detail. However, I was able to drive the Quantum home. I just didn't have any power to go uphill and so the ramps, hills, inclines, etc. between where the Injection Pump had its "health issues" and home had me in first gear quite often and the Pump could only handle about half-throttle.
Good Luck on your Quantum,
Gerry

> In attempting to clean rust off the flywheel, I accidentally erased the "O" TDC mark on my flywheel. Is there a way to find & mark TDC on my flywheel without removing the head to see when the #1 piston is at maximum height? In attempting to re-time my engine I apparently moved the timming off enough so that when I turn the engine over by hand, either clock wise or contra clockwise, a piston hits a valve & you can't turn the engine further. I have not tried to force it. I wonder if I could find TDC by marking on the IP gear how far in either direction I could go till I hit a valve with a piston, & mark TDC as half ways between these two points? Or is TDC more than or less than half way between these two points? I just checked & there are four gear points between the point where the piston hits a valve.
> My suggestion would be to mark in a more permanent manor such as drilling a small hole at TDC before doing any timming adjustments on the engine. If I am wrong, please correct me.
