Bill, the wire trick will work. I usually use a coat hanger, but 12 or 10
AWG solid wire will also work. You will have to take off the insulator,
though. I've done it before.
The key is to hold the wire up while you are turning the crankshaft. It's
pretty easy, as the crank bolt is right there. I put the rachet on it, and
have it "ready". Then, put the wire in and start turning.
In your case, you will have to remove the valve cover to check the cam also.
I'd probably put the crank where all four pistons are near their center
point, and then put the cam at #1TDC. Then, you can put the crank in the
right place, and not worry about interference with the valves.
