Dave, the trans can be made to fit but.... It requires cutting either
way you go. I did it on top of the hump and drilled holes through the
firewall for the cables to pass through but you can also mount through
the hump and run the cables under the car.. There should be
information on the Yahoo VanagonTDI group and there is a TDI swap
group on Fred's TDI page. Also, does the Cabby already have a
hydraulic clutch? If so, that make the change over really easy. If
not, well, lets just say it requires getting some parts not available
on US vehicles. I can get you more detail if you need. BTW it also
requires removing the entire under hood wiring harness, ecu etc and
carefully splicing it into the donor car harness, not too bad if you
are good with wiring diagrams. Luckily the Passat didn't use a pedal
DBW system it actually had a cable operated system that connected the
cable to the actuator,(something else you would have to remove and
transplant).
That being said, you can bolt the 96 TDI engine right up to the trans
that is in the Cabby. You might eventually beat it to death due to
the torque but it will work. I personally think that an FF or FN 5
speed trans would probably work really well as long as you don't
hammer the thing. Drop me an email off list if you want more info.
