The cold starting at very low temperatures is a combination of VERY
exacting control on the injection, the direct injection itself, super
high injection pressures that really atomize the fuel for easy light
up, lower compression, intake swirl and a bunch of other things.
Unfortunately, right now there are a bunch of people with 04-06 PD
engine TDIs whose cars are not starting at all much below freezing.
VW did a glowplug change and a reflash on the ECU recall that has made
many cars in Canada and the northern US virtually impossible to start
in cold weather. Mine car didn't seem to be so horribly effected on
the three days we had temps in the teens but it did start rough. Hayden
