Hi Folks;
Here is my take on the Giles performance bosch diesel injection pump
rebuild. I find it very hard to belive that he could come up with anything
new after all these years. The whole trucking industry lived by their
injection pumps and pretty much the only thing you could do to make a pump
perform better was to turn up the max fuel screw. It is a simple adjustment
that anyone can do. The limiting factor to the increase in power is how much
black smoke you can stand when you put your foot in the pump. Before the
days of computer run diesels here in the northwest you would see the boys
blowing huge amounts of black smoke out of the stacks when they shifted on
the hills.
In this post below by Brian Hoeft. He says he has a Giles pump which
gives lots of power and makes enough smoke to blind the car behind him if he
wants. So I assume from that the Giles performance pump is a good rebuild
with the max fuel screw set beyond Bosch spec.'s. I always set the max fuel
screw on my pumps after I have the idle and timing set to spec.'s. I like to
se a little smoke when I put my foot in the pump but not enough that the
smoke cops want to stop me or the SUV behind me wants to pull out his 45 and
put a few ventilation holes in my Rabbit pickup.
I may well be wrong but I belive you can go to a good local pump
rebuilder and get the same performance by after you have it installed on
your 1.6, have all in time and tune then you put about an eighth of a turn
in on the max fuel screw. Magically you will have a performance pump. It's
all a matter of how much smoke you can endure. For a real performance
booster open up the exhaust. there is no downside to that.
