You could remove the pipe and run Baja (desert race) and not cause cam *lifter
*damage, although cylinder, piston rings and valve seats would not fair
well.
My BEW at idle (ScanGuage) is 14.7 MAP (no pressure, no vacuum) anything
above idle is boosted ( about 7 psi at 55 cruise), when my intake separated
just before the intercooler it would have been pumping out air (boost) and
not sucking dirty air in, so if the two pipes were near each other, boost
from the turbo would have kept the dirt away from the intercooler intake,
although there would be little, if any boost, going to the engine resulting
in the poor performance.
