I have only heard of one time that the engine was removed and not the tranny but it isn't worth the hassle or we all would do it. One issue going out the bottom is getting the exhaust manifold to clear the exhaust. Going out the top and you have the issue of all the wires and cables and it helps to take the hood off. First one I ever took out was with a couple spare tire jacks. Drained all the fluids. Then took the tranny out while the engine was still attached. I also took the head off the engine and injection pump. Then I dropped the engine out, laid it on its side and pulled it out in the parking lot of my internship place in Wyoming. I then rebuild and assembled what I could in my apartment and used my vw truck and topper as my work bench and to keep things out of the rain and wind. I did barrow a cherry picker for the install once the engine and tranny were mounted together in the bed of the pickup.

Clean out the triple square bolt heads really good with a wire pick or something close. Make sure you torque back to 33 ft/lbs. If you do happen to strip the bolts you can get off with a vice grips if they weren't over torqued on install.
