[Vwdiesel] Fwd: May need a 1.9TD head

So the diagnosis is in. The head can be saved but several of the valves/guides
need to be replaced to the tune of $800 at NW Connecting Rod.

My mech wants $900 in labor w/a $500 'miscellaneous' fee to cover head gaskets,
oil filter, oil, coolant, etc.

Low end will be $1800 or so and top end will be $2400 with taxes etc. I really
don't see any other way out of this as I am unable to do the work myself.

Oh well. This is a status update I guess.

Regards,
Marco

Get the head casting number. I would think it is the same 028 type head.
I would be surprised if you head is 100% trashed. They are pretty tough.
I would be more worried about piston tops and all.

Get new 7mm valves, maybe if they are bend real bad I would spend the $2 for new
valve guides and have the old ones pushed out and new ones installed. You
should be ok. Maybe need a new cam if it got scored to badly.

Best of luck Marco
take pictures and post so we may be able to help more.

Howdy,

Long story short, my timing belt shredded on my way to get it replaced (had
a diesel leak that must have gotten on the belt material) so now I may need
a 1.9TD head. The van is at my mech (I have no shop space) and is being
torn apart right now to assess the damage.

My engine is a 1.9TD code ABL which was imported from Europe/UK and
installed in my 82 DV Westy. This engine was used in the Eurovan in the
UK/Europe from 1997 to 2002.

I'm hoping that most 1.9 TD heads of that vintage are similar enough for me
to be able to use one from an AAZ or compatible. Not sure what the damage
is right now, but I thought I'd see what's out there in the meantime.

I'm located in Seattle and am willing to drive to Vancouver, BC or Portland
to pick up a suitable part. Can pay for shipping if needed.

Let me know what you've got. Thanks for your help in advance.

Cheers,
Marco
