I agree with Brian. I was going to mention the plugs. If it is a battery 
power problem, A quick check would be to use jump leads and a spare battery. 
These older starters are pretty tough, assuming no corrosion on terminals. 
Having a diesel one next to the gasser ones looks like the one gave birth to 
the other.

What was the compression ratios like?  Not that that matters that much, if 
glows are fine.
