[Vwdiesel] More coolant issues

so I fixed the leak on my 81 rabbit. But NOW the engine is running hot and
coolant is coughing out of the overflow tank, it won't keep coolant in! I
initially thought blown headgasket, however I am not getting bubbles and no
white smoke....it just steams and throws up coolant! Should I try replacing
the water pump? Also I have a new thermostat installed...but the overheating
is recent.
