[Vwdiesel] Not diesel, just brake bleeding hell on a VW@ bug question

I have been following this although I have never worked on any VW brakes. In reading other comments I recall two things. A spacer on the master cylinder fell into a cavity where it could not be recovered. Could the replacement be too short? Maybe the other one was too. Was the replacement master cylinder the same dimensions? Are there different master cylinders for different year beetles? Also mentioned were some type of "restrictors" between the brake hose & the front wheel cylinders. Could this have anything to do with the problem? Does this beetle have front disk or drum brakes? If disk, is there a proportioning valve between the front & rear brakes. I am interested in how this is solved as learning for myself, since there is still a lot I don't know.
