Hmmm, VNT didn't come out until 99.5 (A4 chassis) in the US.

As far as I can imagine, "sounds terrible" could only mean loud dieseling
(timing, injector issues?), rod-knocking (clapped-out engine), or
exhaust-leak type sounds.  Or maybe belt-related noise?

None of these should be terribly difficult fixes.

You'll have to be more specific on the sound front. :)
