The Quantum is the successor to the Dasher. Both have "north/south engines where as the Rabbit/Golf/Jetta engines are traverse or "east/west" engines. The last Dasher was in 1981, it became the Quantum in 1982 & several years later, I think 1989 but could be wrong. Then it became the Passet which I think the Dasher & Quantum have always been known as in Europe & elsewhere except for the USA/Canada market. Again, please correct me if I am wrong The Dasher, 1981 & earlier had the 1.5 engine with 11 mm head bolts. It might have been a 1.6 engine but it still had 11 mm head bolts. The Dasher did not have a turbo but the Quantum did. The Dasher had a 4 speed transmission whereas the Quantum had a 5 speed. I understand the Dasher, Rabbit, & Quantum will interchange except for the oil pans which are different for the Dasher/Quantum engines & the traverse engines.
I have a question. Is the diesel gear box gearing different than the gas engines? If so, a gas engine might fit but not have the correct gearing. Comments?
