  Generally, the diesels have higher gearing than the gas powered 
versions.  Not so high that putting a gas engine behind an FF or 
equivalent would be a problem.  The lower ratio and close gearing
is for fast acceleration.
  "Correct" gearing is when it does what you want it to.  Be that 
fast acceleration, high mileage, pull a trailer or whatever.  All take 
different "correct" gearing.
