Oh, poo, no vag-com.
That's working with only a half a toolbox these days.
There are days I could just Kiss Uwe for hacking his vw how many years ago
and writing what has become vcds. It's fricking brilliant.

Too bad about the snowboard thing.   Well, better to be hurt
skiing/snowboarding than to not have gone at all....

Adaptation is essentially the output you get to see from vcds, or VW's
software that tells you the components are installed and working correctly,
talking to the ECu in the way they were designed to do.
You have to adapt new things to the ecu, sort of like a handshake of
greeting to get them acquainted.  Some stuff is plug and play, some is like
installing a new video card into a 10 year old computer- they can only talk
after appropriate introductions have been made.

I would find it hard to believe that timing has jumped a tooth coincident
with the alt failure, unless it barfed parts at the t-belt, and the cover
was off the tbelt.
